Medical Mutual provides medical professional liability insurance to physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, and allied health facilities in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. The Company underwrites all specialties, a long-held principle aimed at providing stability for the medical communities the Company serves and to foster access to comprehensive care. Today, Medical Mutual insures 38 hospitals and nearly 3,700 physicians and enjoys an A.M. Best A, or Excellent, rating.

Medical Mutual is seeking a professional underwriter with 3-5 years of experience to join our team. The incumbent will develop strong broker and customer relationships to enhance retention and new business. This position is responsible for managing a book of healthcare professional liability business to achieve profitability objectives. The individual will review and evaluate insurance applications, renewals, and endorsements within the defined authority. The individual will be responsible for underwriting small and large risks across a variety of healthcare segments, including physicians, nursing homes, hospitals, and various healthcare systems. Responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating insurance applications, accurately preparing and presenting renewal proposals and new business quotations, performing detailed risk analysis, and interpreting and explaining policy terms and conditions. The successful underwriter will offer appropriate underwriting solutions for our clients based on analysis of exposures, losses, coverage, pricing, and structure, with a strong focus on profitability.

We invite applicants with the following minimum requirements to apply:

  1. 3-5 years of underwriting experience.
  2. A Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and a professional designation are required. Medical Professional Liability or Commercial Lines underwriting experience is required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with insureds and agents to collect information for risk assessment.
  4. The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  5. Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  6. Familiarity with business information technology
  7. Possess a current valid driver’s license and required insurance. Be available to travel throughout New England on occasion.
