Adverse Outcomes

How to respond

What to do, what to expect in the event of an adverse outcome or claim.

When a patient experiences a complication or adverse outcome, make contact with him or her in a timely way. Avoiding it can harm the relationship not only with the patient, but in many cases, with their family too. It is worth noting that the family is also likely to be suffering from the outcome at some level.

Although most healthcare providers know they need to call Medical Mutual if they are served with a notice of claim, complaint, or other legal document, we also provide early consultation and recommendations in the event of an adverse outcome – and this can be your best defense against that outcome turning into a future claim. Our Claims Representatives and Risk Managers provide practical information and guidance to help you do the right thing going forward in such cases – for the wellbeing of both the patient and the healthcare provider involved.

To report an adverse outcome, or any indication of a potential or actual claim, call the Medical Mutual Claims Department at 800.942.2791.
