Physicians take an oath to protect their patients and do no harm; however, for some doctors, greed drove them to put criminal profits ahead of the best interests of their patients. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) charged 12 medical professionals, including seven physicians, with opioid distribution offenses.
This article in MDedge, Multistate opioid crackdown nets indictment against seven physicians, reports that through coordination of state and federal law enforcement, the DOJ charged defendants with illegal distribution of controlled substances. The 12 medical professionals distributed more than 115 million controlled substances in eight federal districts.
