Medical Mutual Donations To Support Physician Health Programs and Improve Practice Environment
The Physician's Health Programs (PHPs)
of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont
recently received financial help in their
efforts to help doctors in their memberships
who suffer from alcohol or chemical
dependency, senility or other behavioral
or mental health illnesses. Medical
Mutual Insurance Company of Maine
donated $10,000 to the Maine Medical
Association's Medical Professionals Health
Program and $6,000 each to the New
Hampshire Medical Society's Professionals
Health Program and the Vermont Medical
Society's Practitioner Health Program.
Medical Mutual has long supported
such PHPs said Terrance J. Sheehan, MD,
President and CEO of the Company.
PHPs, he said, are important to both
Northern New England’s medical community
and the community at large because
they help physicians and other healthcare
practitioners obtain the treatment they
need to tackle issues that may compromise
their professional and personal lives, as
well as the lives of their patients.
“As a Company, we’re committed not
only to helping protect the assets and
reputations of our insureds, but also to
improving the overall care environment
on behalf of the patients they serve. The
Physician Health Programs are a natural
and important component in supporting
that mission,” said Sheehan.
Participation in a PHP is voluntary,
with referrals coming from colleagues,
family members, friends, or patients, as
well as self-referrals by the practitioners
themselves. Each program is administered
in confidence with compassion and
understanding, subject only to the overreaching
responsibility of patient safety.
