Practice Managers to Gain Practical Insight on The Practice of Risk Management

“Interest has been so great that we doubled our intended capacity and, regretfully, we’ve still had to turn a few people away.”
— Cheryl Peaslee

When it comes to reducing risk in the physician office practice, systems matter. And on July 8, 2008, managers of practices insured by Medical Mutual will have the opportunity to learn about practical risk management strategies related to everyday systems within the office.

Responding to feedback gathered from last year’s inaugural Practice Manager’s Workshop, this year’s program has been designed to provide specific guidance on ways practice managers can foster better risk management within the office environment.

The afternoon-long program, which will be held at Portland’s Regency Hotel, will feature presentations by Medical Mutual Risk Managers and Claims Adjusters on Physician Consult and Diagnostic Test Tracking, as well as Appointment Management, as they relate to risk management.

In addition to systems overviews, the program will also include Break-Out Sessions where Medical Mutual Risk Managers and Claims Adjusters will lead discussions on best practices related to common, yet specific, issues encountered within the office practice. Attendees will also participate in one of four different Break-Out Sessions: Termination of a Physician-Patient Relationship; Managing Patient Complaints; Drug Diversion and Narcotic Management; and Medical Records Issues.

Response for this year’s Practice Manager’s Workshop has been overwhelming. At press time, all 80 slots for the seminar were filled. Cheryl Peaslee, Manager of Medical Mutual’s Risk Management Department, said, “The interest in this year’s workshop has been so great that we doubled our intended capacity to accommodate the incoming requests for reservations and, regretfully, we’ve still had to turn a few people away.”

Given the program’s unforeseen increase in demand, Peaslee said the Company will work to ensure that all interested practice managers will have the opportunity to attend future workshops either by securing larger venues or holding multiple sessions of each.
