The Vermont Practitioner Health Program has received a $6,000 donation from Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine, the medical professional liability carrier endorsed by the VMS.

VPHP Medical Director David Simmons, M.D., accepted the donation from Terrance J. Sheehan, M.D., Medical Mutual’s president and CEO, during a ceremony at Medical Mutual’s headquarters in Portland, Maine.

“The Vermont Medical Society and the Vermont Practitioner Health Program thank Medical Mutual for this generous donation,” said Dr. Simmons. “This contribution will help the VPHP reach more practitioners and further the program’s mission of protecting the public by early identification, treatment, and rehabilitation of individual providers.”

“Medical Mutual takes its advocacy role very seriously and we’re more than happy to support any program that can benefit physicians and their patients with either a monetary contribution or through active hands-on participation in educational and risk management initiatives,” said Dr. Sheehan.

VPHP Medical Director David Simmons,Medical Mutual is supporting similar programs at the same level in New Hampshire and Maine, Dr. Sheehan added. “Medical Mutual recognizes how important the medical societies are to the physicians and the communities in which they serve,” he said.

Medical Mutual was endorsed as the medical professional liability carrier of choice by the Vermont Medical Society in 2000. The company is also endorsed by the Maine Medical Association, the Maine Osteopathic Association, the Maine Hospital Association and the New Hampshire Medical Society. In Vermont, Medical Mutual currently insures 305 physicians and five hospitals.

Medical Mutual recently declared a $4 million dividend, payable as a credit against premiums on policies renewing after June 30, 2007 to eligible insureds in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. It is the seventh time that the company has returned funds in excess of what was deemed necessary to cover claims and the cost of doing business. Medical Mutual has given back nearly $19 million to policyholders since the first dividend was declared in 1992.
